Scouts Canada, the country’s leading youth organization, offers seven challenging programs for boys, girls and youth age 5-26 in thousands of individual groups in most cities and towns across Canada. Over 74,000 young people enjoy Scouts Canada’s programs, which are provided by 23,000 caring and dedicated volunteers. Scouts Canada’s national office is located in Ottawa.

Cadets Canada

The Cadet Program:

* promotes teamwork, leadership and citizenship
* helps develop decision making skills
* increases self-confidence and physical fitness

The Cadet Program contains three separate elements: sea, army and air. While all three elements share common training, each program also has its own distinct focus.

Sea Cadets – focus on seamanship and learning to sail

Army Cadets – focus on outdoor adventure

Air Cadets – focus on principles of aviation and learning to fly

There are no registration fees or dues to join the Cadet Program.

Upon joining, uniforms and accoutrements are provided free of charge.

Cadets and parents are encouraged to participate in and contribute to fundraising on behalf of the Local Sponsoring Committee and League, to offset costs not covered by the Department of National Defence.

BC Green Games

If you’re wanting to get involved in environmental issues, check out the BC Green Games. A great way to fulfill your volunteer hours while also connecting to your community, the BC Green Games is a two-in one! Take a look at this link:

Students across the province are being challenged to become environmental stewards by developing school or community-based action projects that help protect the environment, Education Minister Shirley Bond announced, at the launch of the BC Green Games at Science World.

The Government of British Columbia is investing close to $160,000 in BC Green Games to encourage students to start projects that make positive changes in their school or community relating to sustainable development, greenhouse gas reduction, or environmental stewardship.

Up to $50,000 in prize money is available for winning school entries, and the challenge is open to students in kindergarten through Grade 12. Twenty-four $2,000 prizes and two “Viewer’s Choice” awards of $1,000 will be awarded. The prize money will be given directly to winning schools to sustain and support environmental action projects. In addition, Solar BC will be awarding solar power systems to three of the twenty-six prize-winning schools via a random draw.

These projects can be started at your school or in your community’s neighborhood! So, what are you waiting for? Start composting, recycling and gardening!

British Columbia Youth Parliament

Need some hours or are you simply looking to meet some like-minded youth?

Youth Parliaments are a must for students who want to meet other motivated and passionate students their age. The British Columbia Youth Parliament is a youth service organization dedicated to fulfilling its’ motto of youth serving youth. Every year 95 individuals from around BC gather in Victoria at the legislature and spend a week experiencing and partaking in the parliamentary process, debating and learning all about the BC Youth Parliament and its various community initiatives.

Throughout the year, the Members of their organization continue to be involved, partaking in a variety of activities in their communities. They are responsible for organizing several Regional Youth Parliaments and community service events, as well as a Sweet Dream Dessert and Auction to raise money for our projects. One of their largest and most ambitious projects is Camp Phoenix, a summer camp for children ages 8-11. Apply early through your school! Check out their website at:

Model United Nations

Model United Nations is a fantastic way to become engaged with world issues and to meet like-minded and knowledgeable youth. If your school doesn’t have an MUN club, start one! MUN teaches you valuable debate, public speaking and research skills and is also a great way to fill up community service hours! What is MUN? MUN is the youth re-enactment of the work that the UN does. Depending on the conference, you may have several different councils and committees to choose from ranging from the Security Council to the ASEAN +3. It is a great experience and the nice thing is that plenty of the most major MUN conferences are based here in British Columbia.

CAHSMUN-Canadian All High-Schools MUN (http://www.cahsmun.org/) is a conference that draws students from all over Canada. It is a great starting point for several beginner MUN-ers. A good tip for beginners is to join larger committees such as the WHO (World Health Organization) so that it is easier to learn the protocol and rules of MUN.

VMUN-Vancouver MUN is based in Vancouver and draws many students from the Lower Mainland. Google VMUN near the end of the year for their website.

ConnectMUN (http://www.connectmun.ca/) is a new conference in B.C that offers the Commonwealth committee.

SFU (Simon Fraser University) and UBC (University of British Columbia) also offer MUN conferences for students yearly.
