Can’t get enough of chemistry?

The Canadian Chemistry Contest covers a wide range of materials in the Pan-Canada curriculum – from gas equilibrium to organic chemistry. Part A of the contest consist of 25 multiple choice questions, while Part B contains two essays (chosen from four topics). Each part must be completed within 90min. Monetary prizes are awarded to the top scorers. This contest is completely hand-marked!

Arvon International Poetry Competition

Poems are submitted anonymously. There will be a first prize of £5,000, a second prize of £2,500, a third prize of £1,000 and three prizes of £500 each. A Ted Hughes Environmental Poetry Prize of £1000 and Ted Hughes publications is also being offered. All the winning poems and any poems the judges may wish to select for special commendation will be published in a Competition Anthology, which will be available to purchase from 15th October 2008.

While doing some research for the Graduation Transitions site, I stumbled upon this great website: www.MedHopeful.com. For anyone who has any questions about university, university life, scholarships, how to apply for scholarships, it is all there. Joshua Liu is a recipient of the TD Canada Trust Scholarships for Community Leadership and was named one of Canada’s top 20 under 20. His blog features all you need to know about how to get to medical school and university. For those who don’t want to get to medical school, but need some great study tips for tests or projects, it is all there as well!

Major Canadian Scholarships open to YOU.

Who doesn’t love anything free? As the saying goes, “The best things in life are free.” So why pass up the opportunity for free money when it’s dangling right in front of your eyes? Contrary to popular belief, plenty of scholarships are left unawarded simply because no one bothered to apply for them! That’s some free money right there!

But what about some big bucks? Where do they come from? What types of awards exist that are worth considerable sums? The following scholarships are worth a considerable amount of money and usually span over the time of 4 years. Yes, they are the scholarships that are most applied to by students, but they are worth a shot! You could finish your undergrad for free without paying a penny!

The Loran Award (http://www.loranaward.ca/) is worth up to $75,000. A lucky group of 30 students selected from a small crowd of finalists receive this substantial sum. Provincial finalists receive a one-time $2000, while national finalists receive a one-time $3000. There are two ways to apply for this award. Your school can nominate a maximum of three candidates (sponsored), or you can apply directly (direct). Sponsored and direct applications are evaluated separately. Applicants must fit a criterion of an 85% and up average, good character, outstanding service and the potential to lead.

The Millennium Excellence Award

(http://www.excellenceaward.ca/entrance/_e/index.php?page=1) is offered to students who display qualities of good citizenship, leadership, community service, academic achievement and dedication. All you have to do is write a few essays and fill out an application. If you make it to the final round, there will be a short phone interview. There are three levels of scholarships handed out to students: National ($20,000), Provincial/Territorial ($16,000), and Local ($4,000). Over 1,000 students will win this award!

The TD Canada Trust Scholarships (http://www.tdcanadatrust.com/scholarship/) are offered to 20 students who have shown leadership in many areas including environmental cleanup, the promotion of social justice, and the fight against child poverty, to name just a few. The awards are valued at up to $70,000. Applicants must have maintained an average of 75% + during the school year. The application process involves a 500 word essay about your community leadership, three letters of reference regarding your community involvement, and one letter from your school.

The list below is a great starting point and has been helpful for many British Columbian students in the past. We also recommend that you look at BC Awards Online for more listings and information about scholarships available to BC students. If your parents are part of a union, you also may be eligible for scholarships offered annually to the children of employees. Do you work? Places like McDonalds, Tim Hortons and Burger King offer annual scholarships each year for post-secondary education! Organizations such as Girl Guides and Cadets also offer valuable scholarships each year. You may be the right candidate for many scholarships, just apply for them! What’s to lose?
